  • Dole Whip - A Slice of Heaven on a Hot Day

Summer is here and like many people, staying cool can be tough in the heat. It can even be hotter if you are touring Walt Disney World with crowds of people around you and the asphalt heating up under your feet!

I know the very first trip that we made to Disney as a family back in May of 2006 we hit a very unusual heat wave. All we could think about was staying cool.

One particular day, we were at Magic Kingdom the kids were hot and cranky. We were near Pirates of the Caribbean when my husband and I decided to head back to the hotel for dip in the pool and much needed break.

As we were walking towards the exit of Adventureland, we came upon a line of people. We stopped to see where the line led up to, it was a little place called Aloha Isle Refreshments. We asked a couple waiting in line “What is so good that everyone is waiting for a taste in this heat?” their response was “A Dole Whip!” Well, with a line like this and all of us in need of a cool down we decided to give this refreshment a try.

We waited in line patiently trying to sneak a peek as people paraded away from the counter with their little slice of heaven in tow.

It was our turn to order, we were salivating waiting to try our Dole Whip. Our first taste, all I could think was “Why have I never experienced this delicious treat before?” The combination of the Dole soft serve ice cream and the pineapple juice are perfection. Our children would have never thought to try anything that is not chocolate ice cream, but this delightful snack was something even our kids enjoyed.

If you have never tried one, put it on your list of “things to do at Magic Kingdom.”

If you have experienced the deliciousness of a Dole Whip and want to bring a little Disney into your home, here is a recipe. The only thing it lacking is you are not at Disney enjoying this tasty treat.

    Bon Appetit!

    Dole Whip Recipe:

2 cans (20 oz. each) DOLE Crushed Pineapple

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    2 tablespoons lime juice

    1/3 cup sugar

1-1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

Drain pineapple; reserve 2 tablespoons juice. Set aside.

Blend the pineapple, lemon and lime juice, sugar and reserved pineapple juice until it is smooth.

    Freeze about 1-2 hours.

Stir the pineapple slush into the whipped cream and freeze. Serve when completely frozen.
